What story are you telling yourself about yourself?

What story are you telling yourself about yourself?

During a recent mentoring session, it became apparent that my mentee had a range of fairly rigid beliefs about who and what he was … and wasn’t.

It didn’t take long for him (and us) to realise that there was very little, if any evidence for these beliefs.

And it didn’t take long for him to then start to see a different version of himself, one that might allow him to achieve more in a specific area where he had certain goals.

All of which reminded me that we’re constantly telling ourselves stories about the world around us including … ourselves.

And those stories aren’t always 100% grounded in reality or unchangeable.

We can rewrite the stories we tell ourselves, including those we tell ourselves about ourselves; and in doing so, we can become a new version of ourselves that if we want, is happier and more successful (however you define that).

Now it goes without saying, that like many things, this is easier said than done. But that being said, it is possible and it is worth the effort.

To begin with, take some time to become more mindful of what you’re telling yourself about yourself. Do you, for example, tell yourself you “are” certain things and that “you’re not” other things? If so, is this true? or does it need to be true forever (we can change!)?

Following this, take some time to reflect on who and what you’d like to be. Are you already some of these things? What can you do to become MORE of these things?

I could go on but I hope you’re getting the message … that what you say to yourself about yourself is important, can be changed, and if you start saying different things to yourself about yourself you can start living a different (better?) life!
