20 Feb The one simple strategy you can use to boost your personal growth
Happiness isn’t a static construct. That is, happiness is constantly changing.
Happiness changes because life changes, and our circumstances change, and we change.
All of which is OK. Except it’s not OK if you get stuck in old habits or patterns that might have served you well a month or a year or several years ago, but are now redundant.
All of which means, happiness requires constant change and adaptation and growth.
The good news is growth is possible. There are hundreds of articles and books explaining how you can grow to be your best possible self, and today I’m not even going to attempt to cover even a fraction of what’s needed. But I do want to share with you one relatively simple habit, that I’ve integrated into my week and that’s really made a significantly positive difference over the last year or so.
Quite simply, once each week, I set aside 5 minutes to review my journal and to reflect on what I could do better.
But let me go back a step. Every day, I add to my journal, twice. Each morning I write about how I’m feeling and what’s going on, trying to remind myself to take a positive, solution focused and grateful attitude into each day. Each evening I write either 3 good things that have happened or a few notes on what’s going well AND, here’s the key to today’s post, ONE THING I COULD DO BETTER.
Now, if that all sounds like a lot of work, it’s not. All up, both entries probably only take 5 – 10 minutes. But that’s not the point. The point is … it’s 100% worth it.
Because as well as directing my mind and redirecting my mind back, regularly, to more helpful and positive aspects of my life and of the world, I also use some of that time to … get better! To grow. And hopefully, to not repeat the same mistakes over and over again (which too many of us do).
So, there you go. Give some thought to my practice and make whatever changes or modifications you want to make so it works for you.
As always, I hope that helps. And as always, I’d love for you to share any thoughts you have on any of my social media pages. Keep well and keep smiling, Dr Tim
