How much is enough?

How much is enough?

I’m going to “warn” you up front that this post doesn’t really offer any happiness tips or answers or solutions or hacks.

Rather, it poses some questions.

That being said they are, in my opinion, important questions; and more so, questions the answers to which will definitively impact your ability to enjoy happiness and satisfaction and in general, life success.

The BIG question is … how much is enough?

This question has been asked a lot in relation to money and happiness; that is, how much money do we need to really be happy? There’s no ONE specific answer, because obviously we’re all different, but the general answer is that it’s MUCH LESS than many of us think. That’s not to say more and more money or wealth is necessarily bad; but the research clearly shows that the “return on investment” rapidly declines the higher up the scale you go. That is, you get less and less happiness bang for your buck whereas other factors, such as relationships and health and meaning and purpose, provide more and more.

But I think this question can and should be applied to many other areas of life. Like how much is enough when it comes to … material possessions and even achievements. Most of us think more is better but again, the research is clear that this isn’t necessarily true.

In most cases, more is better UP TO A POINT, but then more just becomes superfluous at best, and toxic at worst!

Which brings me to my final few questions. Do you know how much is enough for you? If you decide that seeking more and more is not ideal, at least in part because it’s a never ending game and it can create ongoing frustration and disappointment, then what else can you devote your attention to.

Acceptance?

Just being?
