06 Mar Experiencing ALL of life
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and so put a few words together I hope you find helpful …
We all prefer the good parts of life — success, recognition, progress, certainty.
But a meaningful life (and career) requires experiencing all of it.
Avoidance and denial don’t work. Difficult conversations delayed only become harder. Emotions ignored tend to leak out sideways. Problems we pretend aren’t there rarely fix themselves.
At the same time, toxic or excessive positivity isn’t the answer either. “Just stay positive” can silence legitimate concerns, invalidate real stress, and prevent honest problem-solving.
In the workplace, allowing the full human experience means:
– Naming challenges without catastrophising them
– Making space for disappointment, frustration, or uncertainty
– Encouraging respectful disagreement
– Giving honest feedback (with kindness & clarity)
– Recognising effort even when outcomes fall short
– Modelling vulnerability as leaders
Psychological health at work isn’t about eliminating discomfort. It’s about creating environments where people can face reality together … and grow through it.
Thriving organisations aren’t relentlessly positive. They’re emotionally honest.
PS: What’s one thing ANYONE can do to create space for more honest conversations at work?
