In tips 1 and 2 I proffered some tips for limiting the time you spend online and curating your social media and news feeds.
Following on from this, it’s important to remember that doing so is an ongoing, never ending process.
I don’t mean for that to sound pessimistic, or overwhelming, but more so as a reminder that as with all forms of self-care, to reap the full rewards requires constant vigilance and ongoing effort.
It’s like gardening, where one needs to constantly remove unwanted weeds and replenish fresh plantings.
Which is all just another way of saying that self-care requires mindfulness, a vigilance and awareness of what’s working and what’s not. And when warning signs are detected, then the following are highly recommended …
- Slow breathing exercises: Practice slow breathing techniques to manage stress when exposed to upsetting content
- Meditation: Mindfulness meditation can help you stay present and detach from overwhelming news
- Physical activity: Engage in regular exercise to improve overall mental well-being
Even the best management of screen time and media will never be perfect management; so we all need to be mindful of the need to practice other self-care strategies that have been proven useful, time and time again, for millions of people. And one of those people who benefits from these strategies can easily be … you!
