Life Lessons from the Strangest Places (Post 5)

I’ve spoken and written many times before about the dualistic nature of persistence and perseverance.

But this I mean that it is (in simple terms) … good and bad!

There’s no doubt that perseverance is a valuable quality; it’s associated with grit and resilience, which is then associated with goal achievement and success (including happiness).

But like almost everything in life, there are pros and cons. And sometimes, some of us, get so stuck on persevering, on keeping on trying in the face of adversity, that we lose sight of the fact that we may well be better off just giving up!

You see, there’s a rarely recognised power in giving up. Sometimes our energies could be better spent pursuing other endeavours. Sometimes our goals are no longer relevant. Sometimes our goals were just, from the beginning, unrealistic and unachievable which means blind pushing on will just lead to more and more frustration and disappointment.

There are all sorts of reasons giving up might be an option worth considering. This is today’s somewhat strange life lesson.

NB: if you’ve found this, or any of my blog posts helpful, please feel free to share with family, friends, colleagues or anyone! I know it might sound a bit trite, but I’m driven to help people, so you sharing this with others will help me achieve my goal : )
