Creating Happiness Series (Post 1)

Here we go with the first series in this new series of blog posts in which I’ll combine a number of posts to create a mini-program. I’ll be covering how to manage depression and anxiety and stress, as well as how to foster more positive relationships and more.

And what better place to start than with … happiness!

Now, it goes without saying that these mini-programs won’t comprehensively cover everything; but my aim is to offer you tasters, small and manageable strategies that you can practicably apply within the confines of your busy life.

With that in mind, let’s go …

At the risk of stating the obvious, one of the first steps in creating happiness is to BELIEVE that you can create more happiness!

So many people believe happiness is just something some people are born with, or something that just happens to you on a good day; and these might be true BUT we can all take action to boost our positive emotions, each and every day.

The research is very clear on this; people can feel good more often if they practice certain tips but if you don’t believe me, just give it a go anyway because … what’s the worst that could happen?

Again, this isn’t the time or place to fully describe all the happiness boosting strategies but today, or this week, try this and see what happens …

  • look at your diary or calendar, back over the last few weeks, and make a note of all the things you’ve done, and all the places you’ve been, and all the people with whom you’ve interacted
  • then, look at the upcoming appointments in the next few weeks in your diary and take note of all those meetings or scheduled activities you’re really looking forward to
  • now, DO MORE of these things and SPEND MORE TIME with those people and PRIORITISE those positive experiences!

The “science” behind this is what psychologists call “pleasant events scheduling” and in short, it’s been proven to reduce depression and promote happiness.

Sound good? Who’s in?
