06 Nov Adaptable leadership (and note: we’re ALL leaders)
Among other things, one area in which I’ve conducted quite a bit of work over the years is leadership, or more specifically, Positive Leadership.
And among other things, one of the messages I’ve tried to convey, in any and all contexts, is that there isn’t any “one” or “perfect” leadership style that will work for everyone in every context!
Instead, I usually encourage leaders to lead from their own strengths, and even still, to be flexible. Because the situations in which they lead change, and the people around them change.
Now before I go on, I also usually encourage people to think about the idea that anyone can be and in fact is, a leader, regardless of title!
So, whomever you are, and whatever role you’re in, I think you might find this research of some interest.
Coming out of the University of Michigan’s Ross Business School, this article, titled “Developing Adaptive Leaders for Turbulent Times: The Michigan Model of Leadership” provides a great framework we could all use in some way.
The abstract describes the study as such:
“In complex and dynamic times, the Michigan Model of Leadership enables leaders to recognize and effectively manage competing tensions in organizational life. Leaders who utilize the process of Mindful Engagement learn to balance these tensions and make an impact in a world where there are no easy answers. We need leaders with empathy, drive, integrity, and courage–across society and throughout organizational hierarchies–whose core purpose is to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
