24 Oct Some live by a “rule of thumb”, I live by my “rule of one”
Last night I spoke at a wonderful event, at a suburban library, in which I was interviewed about my latest book, “Lost & Found: how to wander your way to a better life” as well as all things happiness, mental health and … life!
It wasn’t overly huge or “sexy” compared to some of the stages I’ve stood and spoken on, but it was really nice and fulfilling, and I felt very connected to the audience.
Regardless of where I speak or to whom I’m speaking, I often doubt anyone will be interested (because that’s just how my inner critic works). But for some time now I’ve been trying to work by this “rule”, and not just in relation to my speaking but also to pretty much any of the several professional activities in which I engage.
When I speak at an event, take part in a podcast interview, write a book or even just send out my simple eNewsletter, my one and only goal is that one person walks away with one idea that will make their life better in one way.
I call it the rule of one!
Now to some, that might not sound very ambitious. And it’s not. But I’ve tried ambition and for a variety of reasons its pursuit wasn’t always health for me.
So, this is my version of a realistic goal that’s still motivating, and I hope, helpful. My idea is to keep things simple and to be happy accepting the simple.
But of course, we’re all different. So, when you head out into the world to do whatever you do, what’s your version of the rule of one? What “rule” could you operate on that would help you live your life better in some way?
