The opportunity within a commute home

The opportunity within a commute home

For several decades, as I’ve worked as a consulting psychologist and workplace / executive coach, the topics of stress, work-life balance, burnout and more have been constant.

As part of that, one of the questions I’ve been asked numerous times, is how to switch off after work and not take work stressors home with me.

As always, the answer will differ for different people and as always, the answers will seem easier said than done but a 2016 study published as a Harvard Business School white paper provides some great advice.

Titled “”Between Home and Work: Commuting as an Opportunity for Role Transitions” the authors conclude by noting that “although commuting is typically seen as an undesirable part of the workday, our theory and results point to the benefits of using it as an opportunity for transitioning into a different role.”

In summary, commutes to and from work are often viewed as unpleasant BUT at the same time, commutes to and from work can be used in helpful and positive ways.

How? Here are my top 3 tips:

1. Choose a spot roughly midway between work and home (it doesn’t matter if you’re walking or driving or catching public transport)
2. When you pass that spot, say on the way home, actively remind yourself that you’re leaving your work life or persona, and entering your home or personal life.
3. As you do so, accept that there may well be some unfinished business at work, but be mindful of the shift in priorities and what’s now of most importance
