Don’t let 1 or 2, become 3 or 4 or more …

Whether you’re trying to meditate on a daily basis, exercise or stick to a healthy eating routine; whether you’re trying to change a behaviour or start a new one … every single one of us will have days when, for a variety of reasons, we just can’t do what we want to do.

It might be some unexpected event that interrupts your schedule, or sickness or just a lack of motivation. You might just forget or be too busy with life’s many demands.

Either way, that’s OK!

We’re all human and so we’re none of us perfect which means if or when we miss a day or two of whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, we should, ideally, be kind to ourselves.

But too often too many of us aren’t! We beat ourselves up and call ourselves all sorts of horrible names, things we’d never call anyone else, and as a result, some of us can then give up.

There’s no point, we tell ourselves, and so 1 or 2 missed days become 3 or 4 or more missed days and then … it becomes harder and harder to start again and get back on track.

It need not be like this. If we’d just accepted the 1 or 2, we’d not necessarily drift into the 3 or 4. If we’d been a bit kinder to ourselves, showing ourselves compassion for being human, then we’d more than likely recover and bounce back with minimal disruption.

And therein lies the answer; self-compassion. The recognition that we all make mistakes, that that’s OK, and that kindness, not self-abuse, is the answer to recovery.
