30 Oct Doing better – bit by bit, day by day
One of my regular habits for happiness is my gratitude practice. At, or near the end of every day, I write down in my journal, 3 good things and/or 3 things for which I’m grateful at the moment.
Not surprisingly, there’s no doubt that this positive focus boosts my mood, enhancing happiness and joy and thankfulness, as well as keeps me on track with regards to keeping things in perspective.
Even at the end of a difficult day, there are always still many things for which I can be thankful.
But that’s not all I do. In addition to recording “3 good things” I also record 1 think I think I could do better.
I don’t do this in a self-critical or punitive way; but rather, in a way where I invite myself to reflect and to learn and hopefully, over time, to improve.
So every day I focus on one area in which I could improve and then once each week, I review these “could do betters” and remind myself of where I can be a better person.
Even just the thought makes me feel happier. The notion of taking a small step each day, or each week, to be better and to enjoy more happiness or quality of life, triggers some happy feelings that reinforce the process.
If I can improve even just one percent, every day or week, then over time I’ll be improving, well … massively!
Don’t ever underestimate the benefits that can come from making small changes regularly!
