Learn to appreciate every moment–by remembering these four words.

As someone who runs a small business, it can be challenging to get away. Even if I take vacation, the temptation’s always there to check email, make sure everything is running smooth, or step in and solve even minor problems.

But there I was, sitting on the living room floor of our vacation rental, a cute place on the beach in my hometown. I had managed to get away…and as I listened to my brother and daughter strum the guitar, I was absorbed.

I wanted to enjoy it. Remember it. Learn from it.

Suddenly, I was reminded of a brilliant Japanese phrase I recently learned. In English, it’s written “Ichi-go ichi-e,” (pronounced “ee-chee go, ee-chee eh”), and it’s loosely translated into these four words:

Once in a lifetime.
