In a study with 900 participants, those who did this were measurably happier than those who didn’t.
Want to feel happier and improve your sense of well-being during the workday (or any other time)? Have a conversation with a friend. That’s the intriguing result of a new study of 900 college students across five college campuses. It doesn’t seem to matter how deep the conversation is or what you discuss–or even if you say much of anything at all, the researchers found. Even a brief conversation where you and your friend just catch up or joke around will have the same effect.
In the one-day study, participants were asked to have one of seven different possible conversations with one of their friends:
Just catching up
A meaningful talk
Joking around
Expressing care
Listening
Valuing others and their opinions
Giving sincere compliments
At the end of the day, participants filled out a survey about their emotions and how their day went…
