The science of happiness, or what's more technically referred to as positive psychology, has developed numerous powerful strategies over the years all of which have been designed to boost happiness and wellbeing. 

Interestingly, some have become more popular than others.

1. Count your blessings

Reflect at the end of the day and write down 3 things that went well and why they went well. This helps overcome gratitude (link is external)adaptation/habituation and increases the salience of good acts.

2. Use your signature strengths in a new way

Complete the VIA Survey (link is external) and identify your highest strengths. Choose one of your top strengths and use it in a new way each day for one week.

3. Write a gratitude (link is external)letter

Write a letter of gratitude to someone you have not previously thanked. I appropriate, meet the person and read the letter.

Top 10 Most Unpopular Ways to Boost Happiness

1.) Letter from the future

Write a letter from “your future self” to yourself in the present. In the letter, describe how positive your life is, the many goals you’ve achieved, and how you used your character strengths to get there.

2.) Prosocial spending

Identify a friend or stranger in need. Spend a small amount of money on them (e.g., a food purchase or a token item).

3.) Signature strengths at work

Examine your top 5 character strengths on the VIA Survey (link is external). Write about how you can use each of these in your average work-day. Be concrete and specific.
