Positive Solutions to…Anger

Positive Solutions to…Anger

Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured (Mark Twain)

Indeed, but anger is also…a normal human emotion and one that according to leading researchers in the field has, over the years, served an evoultionary purpose.

We need to be careful, therefore, that we don't demonise anger and…get angry with the angry! Punitive approaches to any problem rarely work and in this case, I suggest, we'd be seriously exacerbating an already challenging problem.

Today (Wednesday June 20) I'm presenting a keynote at a conference titled "The Age of Rage – Positive Solutions" and I'm specifically focusing on positive psychology strategies that I believe would be useful in tackling anger and rage. In short, here are the main points I'll be presenting…

  • Anger is NOT the problem

  • Anger is a normal, human emotion

  • The problem is aggressive behaviour and violence

  • I suggest we need, therefore, to "accept" anger as an (at times) appropriate "negative emotion" just like we need to accept anxiety, fear, sadness etc

  • At the same time, however, we need to help many to better manage their anger

  • How? With training in emotional intelligence, emotion regulation, mindfulness, meditation and more

  • The solution also lies, I believe, in helping those prone to anger to create a positive and meaningful life; to develop curiosity and empathy for others; to learn how to love and to be loved; and to be more grateful and appreciative for their lives and those in their lives

This is a VERY important issue and I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you find helps you best manage anger and rage? Share your thoughts on The Happiness Institute's Facebook Page HERE
