Happiness is getting on with life despite life

Sometimes life's not quite how you'd like it to be; but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy happiness!

Many people seem to think that life needs to be perfect before they can enjoy happiness; many people also seem to think (incorrectly) that positive psychology is just about enjoying the good times, making as many good times as possible, and pretending times are good even when they're not!

This is so wrong on so many levels; and it's unrealistic and unhelpful!

As a clinical and positive psychologist I certainly encourage my clients (and try to practice myself) to create as many positive experiences as they can AND to savour and celebrate those moments as best they can. 

But, and this is an important but, times won't always be good. That's not a negative statement, just a realistic one. Problems happen, things go wrong, people let you down etcetera etcetera!

But the really happy people don't let this stop them. They see life for what it is, warts and all, glory and beauty, and get on with whatever they need to get on with regardless. This then contributes to them feeling more in control and ultimately, essentially independent of what's going on around them, allows them to enjoy more happiness and a better life. 

So next time you look at something and feel that it's not the way you want it to be, sit back and note that IT IS WHAT IT IS and then do what ever you can to deal with it!
