24 Sep Happiness at work…business owners have more of it
When it comes to happiness, business owners top the charts, according to the largest, most comprehensive study to date on how occupation affects well-being. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, released last week, surveyed 100,826 working adults between January and August, and found business owners outranked 10 other occupations for overall well-being.
Professionals, such as lawyers, doctors, teachers and bankers, came in second, while managers and executives for business and government ranked third. In last place were manufacturing and production employees, such as printers, bakers and assembly line workers. The study covered six categories, including work environment, emotional and physical health, and access to basic needs such as food, shelter and health care.
The findings suggest business owners _ã” despite working the longest hours _ã” feel happier because they enjoy more freedom, flexibility and control, said Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of the Princeton-based Gallup Poll.
