An interesting happiness research finding

I was just re-reading a section of Stephen Post and Jill Neimark’s wonderful book “Why good things happen to good people” and I came across the following research highlight:

When individuals who were unhappy in their marriages but stayed in them were surveyed five years later, 80 per cent were now happy, indicating that if we stick out tough times in a marriage, it’s often (although not always, of course) to our benefit.

It seems to be we could assume the same of happiness more generally – that is, if you can stick it out through tough times you’ll almost certainly be happy again at some point in the future; and if you can, during these difficult times, remind yourself of this future happiness then maybe, just maybe you’ll find the getting through just that bit easier!
